The incident has prompted the Assam Police to work on raising the safety standards for its personnel.

In a tragic incident, an on-duty Assam Police personnel drowned in the Brahmaputra in South Salmara-Mankachar district.

The deceased identified as Kushal Kalita, engaged as the bodyguard of DSP Chandra Kumar Kalita fell into the river during an inspection after his feet slipped while on board a boat.

“Around 8:50 am we boarded the boat and after half an hour the incident took place. I saw him sitting on the boat, most probably it seemed he was about to make a call. Everyone is assuming so. But during this somehow his foot slipped. First his phone fell, after that his service rifle fell into the river and then he toppled over. He tried to swim. It took some time for us to turn the boat and rescue him. We requested everyone near us to save him. 3 persons tried to save him, Life jackets were also thrown towards him. But he could not be saved, it is unfortunate,” police officials said.

However, family members of the deceased alleged that other police personnel present during the incident did not even bother to save him. The inconsolable family members have now sought CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention into the matter and find out as to what exactly had happened.

This incident has raised questions on the safety standards of the police personnel engaged in the crucial task of maintaining law and order.

Assam DGP GP Singh mourned the demise of the police personnel and assured that the needful would be done to raise the safety standards for every cop.

Taking to X, the Assam DGP posted, “Assam Police deeply mourns the sad demise of LNk Kushal Kalita of South Salmara-Mankachar Police. We would continue to make efforts to improve safety standards across the spectrum in Assam Police. We stand by the family of the departed colleague in this hour of grief.”

The last rites of the deceased was performed today. Prior to this the South Salmara-Mankachar district police paid tributes to Kushal Kalita.
