Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has already initiated a massive crackdown against child marriages in the state, today roared in the Assembly as he reiterated his stand that marriages of children barely 5-6 years old will not be allowed at any cost.
A visibly furious CM Sarma said, “I will not allow marriages of 5-6 years old girl child in Assam. Do whatever you can. Listen carefully, I will not allow any child marriage in Assam till I am alive. Till Himanta Biswa Sarma is alive, there will be no child marriage in Assam.”
While daring the Opposition to do whatever it can, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that his government will get rid of this social evil before 2026.
” I will not let you people (opponents) to do business with the children of the Muslim community. I want to challenge you politically that I will shut this shop before 2026,” the Assam CM said.
The CM challenged his political opponents who are opposing the cabinet’s decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935.
The opposition Congress and AIUDF staged walkouts from the Assembly opposing the government decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935.
Stormy scenes were witnessed in the Assembly after the AIUDF moved an adjournment motion to discuss the cabinet decision, which was rejected by Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
Congress members too raised their voice in the House stating that the amendments could have been made to the original bill without repealing it altogether.
Worth mentioning that Assam had witnessed a massive crackdown against child marriages as nearly 5000 people were arrested in the first half of last year, while another considerable number of arrests were made after September.
