Migratory birds arrive in Assam, locals impose fine against any killing

Scores of migratory birds have travelled over thousands of km from Europe, the Himalayan region to reach Assam.

With the onset of winters and the new year knocking at the door, migratory birds have descended upon Poskia Pukhuri in Assam’s Udalguri, much to the delight of the people.

Locals have taken it upon themselves to protect the area and the delicate ecosystem by imposing fines on the killing of birds.

Killing of a single bird will invite a fine of Rs 5,000.

Scores of migratory birds have travelled over thousands of kilometres from Europe, the Himalayan region to reach Assam.

These birds travel to these places in order to escape the chilling Siberian and European winter.

Last year, migratory birds arrived in the month of October at Kaziranga National Park in the state.

What are migratory birds?

Migratory birds are those who migrate from one location to another to breed, feed and raise their offspring. They usually migrate from unfavourable locations to some favourite places which are having suitable conditions along with sufficient food and water resources and are safe as well. The majority of the birds migrate during the breeding season and others migrate for food resources and because of changing seasons.
