Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu visited the affected area this morning and informed that the administration is working to protect the land from getting washed away

Massive erosion has yet again gripped eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district. On Saturday night, massive soil erosion took place at Dibrugarh’s Koila ghat town, causing fear and panic among the residents.

While the administration is making all efforts to control erosion, the heavy flow of the Brahmaputra has become a major cause of concern.

Following the incident, local MLA Prasanta Phookan visited one of the affected areas last night and informed residents that all steps were being taken to ensure that the situation did not worsen any further.

He also informed that SDRF and NDRF personnel have also been pressed into action to control the situation. Phookan said that those living near the riverine areas must take all precautions.

One of the locals speaking to Northeast Live raised concern and said, “This is serious situation. The concerned department should immediately do something otherwise there is a threat as the erosion is now touching the main protection dyke of the Dibrugarh town. Something should be done immediately otherwise the very existence of the town will be threatened.”

Meanwhile, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu visited the affected area this morning and informed that the administration is working to solve the issue.

“Since last evening, approximately 10–12 m of erosion has been reported, because of which the main embankment and the Dibrugarh town protection dyke have been threatened. We are trying to solve the issue,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

He requested the people not to create panic as the department is working on it.

Notably, Dibrugarh is one of the districts that is worst affected by flooding and erosion in the state. While several preventive measures have been implemented in the past to control erosion, they all proved inadequate in checking the twin dangers that loom large over the district.
