Malaria Cases Surge in Assam’s Kokrajhar, 2 Including a Child Dies in a Week

Kokrajhar district in Assam has reported a sharp increase in malaria cases in recent weeks. The outbreak has claimed two lives in the past week alone, including a 4-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man.
A total of 1,901 cases were detected as of November 18, 2024 in Kokrajhar, significantly higher than the 256 cases reported in 2023.
The deceased man has been identified as Jwngsar Wary from Aitugaon village. Wary had been receiving treatment at a private hospital since November 19. He died this morning due to complications from malaria.
The 4-year-old girl, a resident of Saralpara area of the district died on November 17 in Bhutan where she had been taken for treatment after falling ill with malaria.
Doctor P Brahma, District Malaria Officer (DMO), Kokrajhar confirmed that 1,901 malaria cases have been diagnosed since January 2024.
Terming it a case of concern, Doctor P Brahma said, ” Cases of malaria is increasing in the district. Authorities are working to contain the outbreak and the health department has been trying to control the spread of malaria in the district and carrying out various remedial programmes.”
Kokrajhar, with its proximity to Bhutan, remains one of Assam’s most malaria-prone districts, he added.
The health department has urged residents, especially in vulnerable areas, to take preventive measures such as using insect repellent, sleeping under treated nets, and seeking prompt medical care if symptoms like fever, chills, and fatigue arise.
