NEDA convenor and BJP’s top strategist, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is on a mission, meeting with party leaders as well as the leaders of AGP and UPPL (allies of BJP) strategizing and drawing up plans to ensure a big win in the Lok Sabha elections in the state.

While the the NDA partners are working on a war footing and reaching out to the voters, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited Kokrajhar and held back to back meetings with the leadership of BJP, AGP and the UPPL.

UPPL’s Jayanta Basumatary is the common candidate in the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat and will be backed by the BJP and the AGP.

Briefing newspersons after the strategic meeting, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that it has been resolved by the 3 parties to make sure that Jayanta Basumatary wins by a margin of more than 2-3 lakh votes.

CM Sarma said, “I participated in a joint meeting of the leaders of BJP, AGP and UPPL in the run-up to the Lok Sabha election in the Kokrajhar seat. Leadership of all the three parties were present. Jayanta Basumatary is our joint candidate, we have resolved to make Jayanta Basumatary win by a margin of over 2-3 lakh. The 3 parties like a family, we will contest the elections. We will be able to perform well here (Kokrajhar LS seat), this is the resolve we all took today.”

Asked if other parties will be a factor in the Kokrajhar seat, CM Sarma said, “If we look at the results of the last elections- Assembly and BTC polls, then we are ahead by 1.5-2 lakh votes. This time we are trying to increase the vote share by 1 lakh more votes. We want to take the opportunity of the prevailing peace in BTAD, growth and development ushered in BTAD, so that Jayanta Basumatary wins by more than 2.5 lakh votes.”

CM Sarma’s reaction was also sought on whether AIUDF’s decision to help the BPF will affect the prospects of the NDA candidate.

In his response CM Sarma said, “We are not looking into as to what role the AIUDF or the Congress is taking, our eyes are set only on PM Modi, we only want that Modi wins. We do not want to get involved in what other parties are doing. Let them do whatever they want.”

Speaking about the prospects of the BJP and its allies in the ensuing Lok Sabha election in Assam, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We are trying to win 13 seats, victory is sure in 11 seats, if we can win another 2 it will be good. Target is 13, but 11 is confirmed.”

The Assam CM predicts that the Dhubri seat may either go to the Congress or the AIUDF.

“There is a doubt, the Congress may or may not get a single seat. They may win in 1 seat. In Dhubri the main contest will be between the Congress and the AIUDF. We will get lot of votes in Dhubri, when there will be Assembly Elections, we will get 4 seats from Dhubri district. Our votes will be intact in 4 seats, we will do everything including campaigning, but I don’t think that we are in a winning position in Dhubri, that seat might be won by the Congress or the AIUDF,” CM Sarma added.
