The jumbo’s body has been recovered from a water body in the vicinity. It is suspected that the elephant may have died of electrocution.
It is suspected that the elephant may have strayed out of the nearby Dehing Patkai National Park. The real cause of the jumbo’s death is yet to be ascertained by a post-mortem.
Noteworthy here is that this is the second jumbo death in Assam which has taken place just a few days after the highly publicized death of a female elephant in Mariani which had brought in a lot of criticism for the forest department.
The elephant which was injured in an accident was lying in the waters of the Kharikatiya river and was writhing in pain for almost 24 hours with no help coming from the forest department.
A day later, the forest department carried out a rescue mission and successfully managed to carry the elephant out of the river and take her to the forest office of the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary where she was given treatment. But the unfortunate pachyderm finally gave in and lost the battle of life.
