Flood situation grim in Assam, over 20,000 people in 4 districts affected

Flood fury in Assam has begun. Over 20, 295 people in four districts have been affected so far by the first phase of floods, an annual event for the northeastern state. The flood situation worsened since yesterday after the state experienced incessant heavy rainfall with the onset of monsoon. At least 13.50 hectares of crop area has been submerged, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA)’s latest data said.
The 4 affected districts are Cachar, Dhemaji, Kamrup Metro and Lakhimpur.
The ASDMA said that as on June 14, urban flooding has occurred in – Hatigaon, Sijubari, Wireless, Baghorbari, Rukmini Gaon, Sarumotoria, Kalitakuchi under the Dispur revenue circle in Guwahati due to heavy rainfall.
Urban flooding also occurred on June 14 at Silchar – National Highway, Link Road, Ambicapatty, N.S. AVENUE, Sonai Road, the ASDMA report said.
As per the ASDMA data, erosions have occurred at Naduar RC part, Biswanath, Halem, Gohpur in Biswanath district, Bhekeli and Charai Chapori at Dergaon in Jorhat district, Kadam and North Lakhimpur in Lakhimpur district.
A flood affected person of Naoboicha in Lakhimpur district spoke with a heavy heart and said, “everything has been washed away, our condition is very bad.”
Another flood affected person said, “I have lost everything. I earned my livelihood by running a small shop, but water gushed in and I could not take out anything.”
The affected people have appealed that the government take appropriate and timely steps to make sure that the embankments are not breached by raging flood waters.
