At a time when the Assam government is leaving no stone unturned to boost the health sector of the state, the arrest of a fake doctor in Guwahati has sent shock waves among the citizens.

The arrested person has been identified as 45-year-old Nabin Kumar Mishra, who hails from Bhabanipur in Bihar. During investigation, the police found that Mishra had forged his medical certificates and was practicing in a pharmacy in Tarun Nagar area of Guwahati.

A team of Bhangagarh Police arrested Mishra after locals complained about his treatment.

It may be mentioned here that this is not the first time the police have arrested someone impersonating a medical practitioner.

In March this year, the Guwahati police arrested a person impersonating a doctor from the Lal Ganesh area of the city. The arrested person was identified as Premananda Rai, who, according to reports, had been practising as a doctor for over 40 years.

According to reports, Rai used the registration number and medical certificates of a real doctor and had been running a pharmacy in the city since the mid-1980s.

In November last year, a fake doctor—identified as Md Sarimul H Mazumder—was arrested from a health camp in Morigaon organised by the Assam National Health Mission (NHM).

The question that arises here is do pharmacies not check doctors’ backgrounds and credentials before they are recruited? Such lapses could be life-threatening, to say the least.
