Doiheng, one of the oldest villages inhabited by people from the Hmar community since seventeen centuries, has been witnessing bird phenomena during the months of September and October to date

Most people have heard about the world-famous place Jatinga, known as the ‘Valley of Death’, where hundreds of birds commit suicide every year. Situated in the only hilly district of Assam, Dima Hasao, the reason behind the bird phenomenon to date has remained a mystery.

But have you heard of Doiheng, a village situated just 12–13 km away from Jatinga where similar bird phenomena are observed every year?

Doiheng, one of the oldest villages inhabited by people from the Hmar community since seventeen centuries, has been witnessing bird phenomena during the months of September and October to date.
During this month, thousands of migratory birds, including hooded pitta, green pigeon, Koel (both male and female), cattle egret, common moorhen, etc., visit the village.

To observe this bird phenomenon, a team of forest officials from Haflong Forest Range made an official visit to Doiheng as part of their duties and were lucky enough to witness the mysterious birds’ phenomenon when they saw a number of birds flying over their heads.

Meanwhile, the villagers welcomed the winged guests with cheers but also ensured their safety.
What’s surprising is that all these migratory birds are aquatic, juvenile, and diurnal, but they visit this place at night when the weather is foggy, moonless night, and winds blow from a particular side.

These birds are usually attracted to lights, fly towards an object with a light source, hit themselves on objects, and die.

But there has been no solid reason to date, and mystery still continues about the reason behind the deaths of the birds.

To protect the birds, the Assam Forest Department and various NGOs have been spreading awareness among the people.
