Assam cop Junmoni Rabha who was also known as ‘Lady Singham’ had her fair share of controversies when she was alive. Even in death, controversies do not seem to be leaving this Assam Police Sub Inspector who died in a tragic road accident on Tuesday, May 16.
Her death is fast getting mired in controversies. Her case is getting murkier by the hour. Questions are being asked if her accident that happened on Monday past midnight was really an accident or did she fall prey to some foul play.
Claims being made that she was threatened by few cops after she busted a gold smuggling racket and she being named in the FIR as an accused despite the fact that she had busted the gold smuggling racket, her home being raided in her absence and police taking away her and her mother’s money and jewellery.
And finally, Assam DGP handing over the case to CID and Junmoni’s mother demanding a CBI probe instead, many are now wondering if this has always been a case of cop vs cop.
Twist No 1:Twist No 1: Hasina Begum claiming Nowboicha IC threatened Junmoni
If one is to believe Hasina Begum, an acquaintance of Junmoni, the Sub Inspector who was the OC of Morakolong Police Station in Nagaon was allegedly threatened by some individuals and Sanjeeb Bora, Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of Nowboicha Police Station for busting a gold smuggling racket.
Hasina claims to be the person who informed Junmoni about the gold smuggling racket. Junmoni had subsequently busted the racket after raiding the residence of Agjar Ali said to be the kingpin of fake gold trade. This apparently alerted the illegal network and IC Sanjeeb Bora. Hasina further alleged that no action was taken against Agjar Ali by the Nowboicha Police despite cases being registered against him.
Talking to the media, Hasina Begum said, “I received a call from Junmoni days before she died wherein she told me that IC Sanjeeb Bora has demanded Rs 6 lakhs from her in exchange for withholding the case filed against Ajgar Ali. Failing to do so they will take stern action against her within two days. Junmoni Rabha further told me that a case was also registered at the Nogaon Police Station accusing her of kidnapping Agjar Ali.”
Hasina Begum further shared the names of IC Sanjeeb Bora, Sohid, Zakir and said that these people threatened Junmoni for the crackdown on fake currency and fake gold smuggling racket.
Twist No 2: Junmoni named as accused in FIR
Interestingly, Assam DGP, GP Singh has also informed that an FIR was registered at North Lakhimpur Police Station on May 15 in which SI Junmoni Rabha was mentioned as an accused.
If it was Junmoni who had busted the gold smuggling racket and arrested kingpin Agjar Ali then why is Junmoni named as the accused in the FIR registered at North Lakhimpur Police Station?
Twist No 3: Raid at Junmoni’s house in her absence
Junmoni’s distraught mother alleged foul play. The grieving mother strongly feels that her only daughter’s death was not an accident, but she was murdered.
Junmoni’s mother said that few days ago police raided Junmoni’s house at midnight in her absence and took away around Rs 3 lakhs cash and jewellery they found. Her mother is now asking, why the raid? Why is police raiding police? Is it a case of cop against cop?
The fact that DGP Singh has asked CID to investigate Junmoni Rabha’s case is indication enough that there is more to the Junmoni Rabha case.
It may be mentioned here that Junmoni Rabha who hit the headlines last year for arresting her fiancé on charges of fraud and was later herself arrested for her involvement in cases of fraud. She was out on bail.
On the fateful night of May 15, Junmoni was driving alone when she allegedly lost control of her car and hit a stationary truck. The accident took place at Jakhalabandha in Kaliabar, about 50 kms from district headquarters of Nalbari. She was also known as ‘Lady Singham’ and ‘Dabang Cop’.
