The locals of Kathaltoli have alleged that during the night hours, wood, dried betel nuts, and various other illegal items are smuggled from Assam through the check post to Tripura.
Tension gripped Jherjheri check post along the Assam-Tripura border after miscreants, allegedly from Tripura, were involved in a skirmish with police personnel and civilians of Karimganj district of Assam on Saturday.
As per inputs, two cops of Kathaltoli police patrol post in Assam were injured when they reached the incident spot to take stock of the situation.
Reportedly, the situation turned volatile following allegations of illegal smuggling activities along the inter-state border.
The locals of Kathaltoli have alleged that during the night hours, wood, dried betel nuts, and various other illegal items are smuggled from Assam through the check post to Tripura.
It is alleged that earlier on Friday night, a truck loaded with illegal teak wood entered Tripura breaking the check post. Locals on Assam side gathered in the area on Saturday to address the issue.
Kamran Pasha, a resident of Assam while speaking to the media, was assaulted by Badrul Haque, a resident of Tripura who is said to be involved in various smuggling activities.
Following the incident Kamran Pasha lodged an FIR at Kathaltoli police patrol post against Badrul Haque.
Subsequently, a police team led by SI Asish Mahanta entered Tripura to arrest Badrul Haque and bring him back. While doing so, unidentified miscreants reportedly attacked the police team, injuring both Mahanta and his driver Samar Nath.
Situation along the border area continues to remain tense following the spate of violence.
