Assam: Youth rapes 12-year-old girl in Dima Hasao

The accused has been remanded to 5 days of police custody

The rape of a 12-year-old girl in Assam’s Dima Hasao, on July 28 has triggered outrage among the people of the district. Today several women organisations including-Ladies Welfare Society, Mahila Shakti Mondol strongly condemned the inhuman incident and demanded strict action against the culprit.

The shocking incident occurred in the vicinity of a bamboo factory in Manderdisa in the district, on last Friday.

Talking to media, a member of a women organisation said, “At a time when the government continuously is talking about “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” the country is reporting such crimes against women very often. We strongly condemn the heinous crime and demand capital punishment for the culprit”.

The incident came to light after the victim told her family that she had been raped by one Raja Das (26).

Following the incident, the accused was captured by the public and handed over to police.

The victim’s mother lodged an FIR at Langting Police station.

The police produced the accused before the court and the court remanded him to 5 days of police custody for further questioning.

The victim was brought to Haflong Civil Hospital for treatment and was released on Wednesday.
