Assam sizzles as mercury soars to 37 degrees; Assam govt advances school timings

Assam is boiling. At 37 degrees, people in most parts the state are reeling under unbearable heat conditions over the few days. At 37.91 degrees Celsius, Goalpara was the hottest followed by Sarbhog at 36.11 degrees.

Guwahatians too are having a tough time at 36.2 degrees.

There will be no respite from the sweltering heat in the coming days, as the Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has predicted temperatures will remain 3–5 degrees higher for the next few days.

As per the RMC report, rainfall is likely in isolated places like Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Baksa, Nalbari, Kamrup (R), Kamrup (M), Sonitpur, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Majuli, Dima Hasao, Cachar, and Karimganj.

In view of the prevailing heat wave in the state, the Assam government decided to advance the school hours to 7:30 am, keeping in mind the students’ health.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu in a tweet said, “Due to the current heat wave, @SchoolEdnAssam has instructed all DCs to advance school hours to 7:30 am, if required to do so depending upon the district’s situation.”


The timings have been changed for both private and government schools with effect from from June 5 untill further order.
New timings for school:
L.P Schools – 7.30 am to 12 noon
M.E Schools- 7.30 am to 12.30 pm
HS/HS Schools- 7.30 am to 1 pm
