Assam: Situation tense in Shantipur as hundreds gherao police station

Jiten Daimary allegedly assaulted forest official Pranjal Talukdar in Chirang district
The situation in Shantipur, a town in Assam along the India-Bhutan border is tense after one person was arrested on suspicion of physically assaulting an Assam forest official.
After the arrest of Jiten Daimary hundreds of men and women gheraoed the Shantipur Police Station demanding his release.
One of the protestors, speaking to the media, said, “We need the person who has been arrested, six people have been arrested from our region so far. We will not go anywhere until he is released.”
Jiten Daimary allegedly assaulted forest official Pranjal Talukdar in Chirang district. According to reports, the attack occurred when a group of forest officials were on an anti-encroachment drive. Talukdar was seriously injured and was admitted to a private hospital in Bongaigaon town.
It may be mentioned here that forest rangers were also attacked in Chirang on December 18 last year by illegal timber smugglers. Two people were arrested for the incident.
