Assam Municipal Elections 2022: Polling for 80 municipal bodies underway

Elections to the 80 municipal bodies are being held today across Assam. Polling for the civic bodies began today at 8 am and would conclude by 4 in the afternoon.

Polling for the civic bodies began today at 8 am and would conclude by 4 in the afternoon.

Electronic Voting Machines are being used for the first time in Assam for conducting the civic body polls.

A total of 2,532 candidates from various political parties like the ruling BJP, Congress, AGP, AIUDF, among others, are in the fray.

Elections to these civic bodies were scheduled for 2020 but were postponed due to the Covid situation.

A total of 977 wards are there up for grabs among the candidates in a total of 80 municipal bodies.

Results would be declared on March 9.

Earlier today, people gathered at various polling stations early morning to cast their votes. And along with the voters, candidates also turned up to cast their votes.

Meanwhile, polling officials took a novel initiative in Gohpur to give saplings as special gifts to early voters today.

Long queues were also witnessed in Margherita where voters gathered to cast their votes in the ongoing civic body polls.
