Assam minister Atul Bora informed the Assam Assembly that the 4.35 kilometre border has not been fenced due to some issues raised by the Border Guards Bangladesh
The Assam government has affirmed that both the Centre and the state are actively working to seal the India-Bangladesh border completely.
Assam Border Area Protection & Development minister Atul Bora today informed the Assembly that the border fencing is expected to curb illegal immigration.
Addressing the House, minister Atul Bora informed that the India-Bangladesh international border has been fenced in most parts and only 4.35 kilometre of the border in Karimganj district remains to be fenced.
“The 4.35 kilometre border has not been fenced due to some issues raised by the Border Guards Bangladesh,” Bora informed the House.
“The 4.35 kilometre Indo-Bangla border is Karimganj could not be fenced yet due to the single wire fence issue with Border Guards Bangladesh. The matter has been taken up with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India,” Bora later said while speaking to Northeast Live.
Bora further informed that necessary steps are being taken by the Centre and State government to completely seal the international border.
Reportedly, over 40 infiltration bids have been thwarted in Karimganj district after civic unrest gripped the neighbouring Bangladesh in August 5.
It is worth mentioning here that the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) began installing barbed wire fencing along the border areas of the Kushiyara River in Karimganj district in 2009. However, the project remains incomplete due to several reasons.
