Assam: Eminent academician, writer and singer Dr Birendra Nath Dutta passes away

Dutta was awarded the Padmashree Award in 2009 for his immense contribution in the field of education and literature

Renowned writer, singer, folklorist of Assam Dr. Birendra Nath Dutta breathed his last this morning owing to old age ailments. A former president of Assam Sahitya Sabha, Dr Dutta is a recipient of the prestigious Padmashree award.

Dr. Birendra Nath Dutta was born on November 4, 1935 in Nagaon. He received his primary education from Chenikuthi Primary School in Guwahati. After completing his graduation from Visva-Bharati, Shanti Niketan, he obtained a master’s degree in Economics from Gauhati University.

Dr Dutta started his career from the B. Baruah College following which he taught in various colleges and universities of Assam. In 1995, he founded the North East Archival Center at Tezpur University for traditional art and folklore.

Dr Dutta is a recipient of several prestigious awards including Padmashree Award (2009) for his immense contribution to the field of education and literature, the Mahapurush Shri Shri Madhavadeva Award (2006), the Ajan Pir Award (2008), the Tagore Ratna Award of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (2011) and many others.

Dutta was elected as the president of Asom Sahitya Sabha for North Lakhimpur Session, 2003 and Hojai Session, 2004.
