Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s Wife Has ISI links?

"If my wife is an ISI agent of Pakistan, then I am a R&AW agent of India," said Gaurav Gogoi.
A political firestorm has erupted in Assam after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made cryptic yet explosive allegations against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, questioning her 12-year retention of British citizenship and hinting at possible links to Pakistan’s ISI.
In a series of social media posts, CM Sarma questioned why a lawmaker’s wife was allowed to retain her foreign citizenship for over a decade while government officials, particularly those in the Indian Foreign Service, must ensure their foreign spouses acquire Indian citizenship within 6 months. He suggested that such an exception raises concerns about national loyalty and security.
“During my interactions with an IFS officer in Singapore, I learned that officers in the Indian Foreign Service cannot marry a foreign national without prior permission from the Government of India. Moreover, even when permission is granted, it comes with the condition that the spouse must acquire Indian citizenship within six months. Interestingly, this rule does not apply to our lawmakers. However, allowing a foreign spouse of a lawmaker to retain foreign citizenship for 12 years is far too long. Loyalty to the nation must always take precedence over all other considerations,” CM Sarma tweeted.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma questioned why the Congress MP’s wife was allowed to retain her British citizenship for 12 years after their marriage in 2013, pointing out that different rules apply to government officers.
Questioning whether there were links between Elizabeth Gogoi and Pakistan’s ISI, CM Sarma cautioned that “accountability will be necessary,” adding that deflecting responsibility would not be an easy escape.
“Serious questions need to be answered regarding allegations of ISI links, leading young individuals to the Pakistan Embassy for brainwashing and radicalization, and the refusal to take Indian citizenship for the past 12 years. Additionally, participation in a conversion cartel and receiving funds from external sources, including George Soros, to destabilize national security are grave concerns that cannot be ignored. At some point, accountability will be necessary. Simply deflecting responsibility or attempting to shift the focus onto others will not serve as an easy escape route. The nation deserves transparency and truth,” CM Sarma tweeted.
CM Sarma also revived a 2015 incident where, according to him, a first-term MP without naming Gaurav Gogoi was invited by then-Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, to discuss Indo-Pak relations at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. CM Sarma pointed out that the MP was not a member of the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs at the time, questioning the motive behind the meeting.
He further alleged that this MP took a group of 50 to 60 young Indians to meet Pakistani officials despite India’s protest against the Pakistani High Commission’s interference in internal affairs, particularly its links with the Hurriyat Conference.
The Assam CM claimed that, following this meeting, the MP’s startup, Policy for Youth, published an article in The Hindu criticizing the Border Security Force’s handling of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. He also accused the MP of shifting his focus toward sensitive defense matters, raising parliamentary questions on subjects such as Coast Guard radar installations, arms factories, transit routes for trade with Iran, Kashmiri students, and alleged attacks on churches. Sarma suggested that this shift coincided with the MP’s marriage to Elizabeth Gogoi, further deepening suspicions about foreign influence.
He said, “Interestingly, these developments occurred immediately after his marriage to a British citizen with a professional background that raises further questions. Before their marriage, she had worked for an American senator known for close ties with the Pakistani establishment and later spent time in Pakistan, employed by an organization widely believed to be a front for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The timing of these events adds another layer of intrigue to the MP’s evolving political stance and actions.”
The remarks have ignited a heated political debate, with Gogoi hitting back and calling the allegations a diversion tactic. As the controversy escalates, the BJP and Congress are locked in an intense war of words over loyalty, security, and foreign influence in Indian politics.
Responding to the allegations, Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday dismissed them outright, saying that if his wife was being labelled an ISI agent, then by the same logic, he could be called an R&AW agent.
He accused the Assam Chief Minister of attempting to divert attention from allegations against him and his family and insisted that the claims were politically motivated.
“If my wife is an ISI agent of Pakistan, then I am a R&AW agent of India. I don’t mind if a family against whom there are various cases and several allegations makes accusations against me. The Assam Chief Minister is making these allegations only to divert attention from the allegations against him,” he said, ANI reported.
