Will this have a big impact on the 2026 Assembly elections?

The opposition alliance in Assam faced a big blow ahead of the by-polls for 5 assembly seats with the resignation of State Congress president Bhupen Borah from his role as president of the Asom Sanmilita Morcha (Assam United Front) today.

Borah’s resignation comes amid an intense struggle over who will represent the alliance in the Behali assembly seat, with disagreements escalating between Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) Janashakti (CPI-ML).

Borah shot off his resignation letter to Opposition Alliance secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

In his resignation letter, Borah cited tremendous pressure on him and issues arising within the alliance related to the uncertainty surrounding the candidate for the Behali constituency.

“Under the tremendous pressure on me to make the decision enforced, which I am not able to execute, I have no alternative other than tendering my resignation as president of the opposition unity in Assam,” said Borah.

Bhupen Borah’s abrupt decision has sparked a flurry of reactions, leaving many wondering about the future of the opposition alliance in the state.

AJP chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi while expressing his displeasure over the move said that the implications of the move will have far-reaching effects.

Meanwhile, leader of the opposition and senior Assam Congress leader Debbrata Saikia indicated that the Congress is ready to field its own candidate in Behali.

Will this have a big impact on the 2026 Assembly elections? Can the opposition parties trust each other before the assembly elections?
