The couple who had been on the run since September 2, had surrendered before the police in Dibrugarh today morning
After being on the run for at least 10 days, actor and influencer Sumi Borah and her photographer husband Tarkik Borah, wanted in connection with the multi-crore online trading investment scam in Assam, was arrested this morning after they surrendered before the police earlier in the morning today.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police, led by Additional SP Kapil Pathak, was closing in on locating and arresting them after the police traced a vehicle registered in the name of Tarkik in Shillong.
Sumi Borah and Tarkik Borah were on the run since September 2, soon after scam kingpin Bishal Phukan was arrested by the police prompting the police and other security agencies to carry out multiple raids in Meghalaya as well as in Bihar too.
The massive multi-crore scam where investors were duped of their hard-earned money in the name of online trading investment, unfolded following the arrest of mastermind Bishal Phukan on September 2.
Thereafter, Bishal’s links with Sumi and her husband Tarkik Bora was substantiated and the police decided to lodge a suo moto case and initiate further proceedings.
However, both Sumi and Tarkik remained elusive since then before being finally arrested today.
Earlier on Wednesday, Sumi Borah in a video statement refuted claims of deliberately avoiding police arrest, stating that her absence was due to her emotional state in response to the criticism she had been facing.
She also accused the media of maligning her reputation with baseless allegations and causing her significant mental distress.
She explained that she had been in hiding, not out of fear but because she was unable to respond to the media’s accusations. She expressed her intent to surrender, asserting that truth would eventually prevail.
Yesterday, the police arrested Tarkik Bora’s brother Amlan Bora from Bihar in connection with the case.
