Assam: 6 communities stage protest in Delhi demanding ST status

Assam: Slogans demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the 6 ethnic communities from the state reverberated the air in Delhi today.

Will the 6 indigenous communities from Assam be granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status? Unhappy with the alleged delay of the Centre in fulfilling the demand representatives of the 6 communities- Tai Ahom, Moran, Mottock, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi and Tea Tribes staged massive sit-in protest in Delhi today.

The protestors also sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to fulfil the demand which has been raised since the past several years.

Earlier, the 6 ethnic groups seeking Scheduled Tribe (ST) status had formed a united forum under the common platform of Soy Janagosthi Joutha Mancha (Joint Platform of Six Communities). The forum was formed to put pressure on the Centre in fulfilling the demand and carying out further agitation jointly.

A group of Ministers was formed during the first BJP-led government in Assam to deal with the ST issue. But this group is yet to submit its report to the Centre for necessary action.
