Assam: 4 Rhino Poachers Arrested with 1 Rhino Horn

In a recent action, police in Karbi Anglong district have arrested four individuals involved in rhino poaching. The arrests took place during a late-night raid in the Kadamguri area, where law enforcement officials seized a rhino horn from the poachers.

The arrested poachers have been identified as Azimuddin Ahmed, Shan Ahmed, Imran Hussain, and Majidul Rahman. They were arrested following a confession made by another poacher, Abu Hanifa, who provided crucial information leading to the raid and the arrests.

This operation is part of ongoing efforts by Assam authorities to combat the illegal wildlife trade, which continues to threaten the region’s rhino population. The suspects are currently in police custody, and further investigations are underway to uncover more details about their poaching network.

It is to be mentioned that there are around 2,613 rhinos in the Kaziranga National Parkand efforts to keep them safe is on.

This year, efforts to combat poaching have led to significant arrests.

In May a poacher was killed by forest guards of the Kaziranga National Park after a fierce gun battle overnight.

Earlier on January 22 this year, the first case of rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park was reported.
Reportedly, a poacher had killed a rhinoceros and fled with its horn near Maklung forest camp of Agartali forest area in Kaziranga.

After the incident, the police and forest department launched an operation and arrested the poacher identified as Jaggu Pegu and after 4 days, the forest department team recovered the horn which was hidden in the ground behind Pegu’s house.

In 2019, four poachers were arrested in connection with the Rhino poaching incident that took place in Assam.

in 2021, Assam Police arrested three rhino poachers and allegedly recovered arms and ammunition from their possession from Karbi Anglong district.

In April, 2023,3 poachers were arrested in connection with rhino killing at Kaziranga National Park.
The Kaziranga, Manas, Orang National Park, and Pobitora Wildlife sanctuary recorded zero rhino deaths due to poaching in 2022, the first time since 1977. 

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that poaching of rhinos was rampant in the past, which has now come down drastically due to stringent surveillance and other elevated security arrangements being put in by the authorities.
