Assam: 2 minors raped in 24 hours

Within hours of a nine-year old girl being raped near Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, news came in of a 16-year-old girl subjected to the heinous crime in Kokrajhar.

The accused identified as Anuwar Hussain, 24 years old, was arrested soon after a police complaint was filed by the family of the victim.

A case has been registered under section 363/376(3)/328 IPC R/W 69 of the POCSO Act at the Kokrajhar police station.

Salim Minz Organizing Secretary of the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam(AASAA) condemned the incident and sought stern action against the accused.

He said, “We came to know that a tribal girl was raped in Kokrajhar. We the Adivasi Students Union condemn it in strongest terms. We request the district administration to see that the accused is punished. Such incidents can be seen repeatedly occurring in Kokrajhar as well as in other parts of the state. The police administration must take strong steps in this regard so that such incidents do not repeat. We request DGP GP Singh to look into the matter and ensure that the perpetrator is punished.”

The nine-year-old minor was allegedly raped in front of her mother. The mother-daughter duo lived by begging near the Temple. The accused, Nayan Haloi, a photographer, was arrested soon after the horrific incident.

Earlier on October 25, another minor was allegedly raped by 2 youths in Guwahati’s Birubari area. Both the accused, one of whom is a juvenile, was arrested the next day.

Incidentally, these cases have been reported days after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that there has been a significant drop in rape cases, as he shared comparative data since 2019 till August this year.

According to the Chief Minister, rape cases reported during the period are-
2019: 1952 cases
2020: 1736 cases
2021: 1922 cases
2022: 1113 cases
2023 (Till August)- 656 cases
