Assam student Faizan Ahmed death case: Court orders body to be exhumed for another post-mortem

The court has given the police a month's deadline to complete the process

After almost six months of the mysterious death of Faizan Ahmed, an IIT Kharagpur student from Assam whose semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the police to exhume the body conduct post-mortem again.

The court has given the police a month’s deadline to complete the process.

It may be mentioned that on February 20, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha had ordered a forensic probe into the death of Faizan to be conducted by an expert in forensic medicine, after police said that the student had committed suicide.

The forensic expert told the court on March 29 that he was not satisfied with the post-mortem report submitted by police and pleaded for a fresh post-mortem.

Meanwhile, an emotional Faizan’s mother said, “I see a ray of hope that Faizan will get justice. We are hopeful that the Court will deliver justice. The IIT-Kharagpur authorities had said that it was a suicide case and not a murder, but the High Court directive has established the fact that it was a murder. The Kolkata police too had said that it is a case of suicide. He was not weak to commit suicide. It was a planned murder by whoever it is.”

Faizan’s father too hopes that justice will be delivered. He said, “The very first day when I saw my son’s body, I said that it was a murder and was given a suicide angle. But it is a murder case. I hope I get justice from the court.”

23-year old Faizan’s semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room on October 14 last year. Faizan hailed from Eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district. He was laid to rest on October 16.
