Pathetic Health Care System of Arunachal Exposed: Kurung Kumey Residents Deprived of Basic Needs

Despite being the only health care provider in the region, the hospital is severely lacking in several critical areas
In a shocking revelation, the dire state of health care facilities in Arunachal Pradesh has come under scrutiny. The Chera Talo District Hospital in Koloriang, the administrative center of Kurung Kumey district, stands as a glaring example of systemic failure.
Despite being the only health care provider in the region, the hospital is severely lacking in several critical areas, such as manpower, modern infrastructure, and a consistent supply of medicines. This leaves residents struggling to access even basic medical services.
Residents of Kurung Kumey district are forced to undertake a grueling 7 to 8-hour journey to Itanagar for medical treatment, a journey that often proves fatal. During its recent visit to the hospital, Team North East Live was informed by staff and local residents that many patients, including women in labor, often die due to the long and difficult journey to the hospital.
Adding to the frustration, a newly installed X-ray machine at the Chera Talo District Hospital has become a symbol of squandered resources. A working staff at the hospital stated, “The X-ray machine recently brought to the hospital is gathering dust due to technical issues and a lack of trained personnel to operate it, forcing poor patients to travel to Itanagar for even a simple X-ray.”
Doctors posted at the hospital also described the difficult conditions they face, highlighting both the poor state of the facility and the challenging working environment. Many employees who are posted in the Hospital only draw their salaries here as they remain ‘attached’ to other institutions in Itanagar.
Although the dedication of the doctors is noteworthy, the systemic issues remain severe. It is hoped that the government will take prompt action to address these critical deficiencies and improve health care services for the residents of Kurung Kumey.
