Need bilateral talks to resolve issue forever: Arunachal Assembly Speaker on Stapled Visa issue

First Published: 29th July, 2023 20:56 IST

Dorjee maintained that the issue has been there for a long time because of the bilateral relations between India and China

The government of India should have a bilateral dialogue with its Chinese counterpart so they can come to a solution to resolve this issue (stapled visa to Arunachalees) forever, Pasang Dorjee Sona, Speaker of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, said today reacting to stapled visas issued to three Arunachal Wushu players.

“We have always been vocal about bringing a solution to this stapled visa because China gives us stapled visas and Indian immigration doesn’t allow any Arunachalee citizen to visit China. So there needs to be a bilateral talk where they can come to some kind of solution where this kind of issue is resolved forever,” Pasang Dorjee said.

Dorjee maintained that the issue has been there for a long time because of the bilateral relations between India and China; as they say, Arunachal is a disputed area.

Stating that the issue is a matter of concern as Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India, he urged the government of India to look into the issue.

“It’s been there for ages, which a lot of the sportspersons are facing, even our delegates face the same problem,” Dorjee added.

He also highlighted that the issue is not only restricted to visas but also related to developmental projects, which is depriving Arunachal Pradesh from receiving funds for development.

“In a way, it is not only restricted to the visa, when it comes to the ADB funding, the World Bank funding, and the AIIB funding also, because of this Chinese issue, we are not getting the opportunity of developmental funding through these banks,” Dorjee said.

Dorjee also noted that the stapled visa issue will not only hamper the aspiring sportsperson from the state but trade and business too.

“The government of India should sit down and have a bilateral talk with the Chinese counterpart and come to a solution where we are not left out, not only from the developmental projects but also from getting visas to go to China, because this will not only hamper the aspiring sportsperson but trade and business will also hamper a lot,” Dorjee said.
