It was a Sunday well spent for members of the queer community of Itanagar and Naharlagun. The AP Queer Station and the Oju Welfare Association (OWA) jointly organized an LGBTQIA+ meet up at Naharlagun on Sunday that saw ideas, thoughts and emotions being shared freely by people from the queer community who often have to stay bottled up due to societal norms and pressures.

During the meet-up, six short films reflecting the lives and struggles of various spectrums of LGBTQ+ individuals were screened.

The event was attended by over 40 members of the queer community and their allies.

Speaking at the meetup, Sawang Wangchha, a queer activist, highlighted the significance of staying informed about the ongoing hearing in the Supreme Court regarding marriage rights and why it is essential for the community’s progress.

The queer individuals shared their personal stories of struggle for their identity in the society.
Binny Yachu, OWA’s female helpline administrator, motivated the attendees to remain strong, fight for their rights, and not to lose hope.

She emphasised the importance of the community collaborating with the OWA to fight for other vulnerable groups, such as children who are victims of child abuse, child labor and women who are subjected to domestic violence, sexual abuse, and trafficking.

The AP Queer Station team expressed gratitude to OWA chairperson, Anya Ratan for providing a safe space for the queers to conduct events, as well as providing shelter to vulnerable queer individuals in need.
