Top company officials, including the Chief Managing Director (CMD), are in touch with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh regarding the matter.
Insurgent group NSCN (K-YA) has demanded Rs 20 lakh from Oil India Limited (OIL), a central public sector undertaking. The faction has issued the extortion notice to the petroleum giant, which has operations in the thickly forested Manabhum Reserve, that falls in the Changlang and Namsai districts of eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
Following this, OIL has significantly beefed up security arrangements in the Manabhum Reserve Forest.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, OIL Spokesperson Prankush Malla Buzarbaruah said, “We have received an extortion notice from NSCN (K-YA) and accordingly we have beefed up our security arrangement.”
Buzarbaruah stated that top company officials, including the Chief Managing Director (CMD) Ranjit Rath, are in touch with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh regarding the matter. Currently, the site is secured by 40 personnel from the Indian Reserve Battalion, with an additional 22 Special Task Force (STF) officers provided by the state government.
He also noted that 10 more STF personnel are expected to arrive soon to further bolster security.
The company’s wells in the Manabhum Reserve Forest produce approximately 100 kilolitres of crude oil daily, a critical output for the company.
The extortion notice has set off the alarm bells, not just within the company, but throughout the region, where insurgent threats are part of daily life.
