AFSPA extended in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland

The Centre's significant decision comes ahead of the elections in both the states

In a significant development, the Centre has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

As per notification issued by the Union Home Ministry, AFSPA has been extended in Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Besides, areas falling under Namsai, Mahadevpur and Chowkham police stations in Namsai district by another 6 months.

In case of Nagaland, the Centre has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, in 8 districts and 21 police station limits in five districts in Nagaland for six months.

The AFSPA has been extended in Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek and Peren districts.

Besides the AFSPA has also been extended in areas of-
i). Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza and Kezocha police station in Kohima district
ii). Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem and Anaki police stations in Mokokchung
iii). Yanglok police station in Longleng district
iv). Bhandari, Champang and Ralan police stations in Wokha district
v). Ghatashi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhoto, Zunheboto and Aghunato in Zunheboto district

The districts have been declared as “disturbed areas” till September 30, 2024.
