Mizoram: Weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga felicitated

Jeremy Lalrinnunga extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Sports Minister as well as the Mizoram Weightlifting Association for their unending support

Mizoram Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar today felicitated Commonwealth Games gold medallist weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga for bagging gold at the Senior (Men) 67 kg category of Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) National Weightlifting Championship 2023-2024 .

Lalnghinglova Hmar praised Jeremy Lalrinnunga for his achievement and said that sports is the only category where Mizos can achieve the top level in India without reservation.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga also extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Sports Minister as well as the Mizoram Weightlifting Association for their unending support and morale boost even during his injury.

Born on October 26, 2002, Jeremy Lalrinnunga hails from Aizawl, Mizoram.

Since his father, Lalneihtluanga, was a boxer and had won junior national medals, sports had always been a part of his life.

At the 2016 Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, then 13 years old, surprised everyone by winning the silver medal in the 56kg catagory. He then repeated the feat at the Asian Junior Championships.

He won gold at the Commonwealth youth and junior championships and added another silver medal from the world championships the following year.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga, however, gained widespread recognition in 2018.

He won the gold medal in the 62kg category at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires by lifting a total of 274 kg (124 kg in the snatch and 150 kg in the clean-and-jerk). At the Youth Olympics, he became the first Indian to win a gold medal.

He also won the 2019 Asian youth championships and set a national record in the 67kg with a lift of 306kg in the same year.
