Manipur violence victims’ bodies airlifted from Imphal morgue

Burial of the bodies in Kangpokpi will take place tomorrow while the schedule for Churachandpur is yet to be decided.

Solemn scenes were witnessed in the state today as bodies of violence victims, lying in the morgue for months, were flown home for last rites and burial.

The bodies of violence victims have reached Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and even Imphal. Notably, several of these bodies were in hospital morgues since May.

The bodies were moved out of the morgues in Imphal under heavy security cover and then airlifted to Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. At least 4 bodies were also flown from Churachandpur to Imphal. Air Force choppers were used for transportation of the bodies.

Four bodies were also flown in to Imphal from Churachandpur.

The move to transport the mortal remains comes days after the Supreme Court’s directions on the dignified disposal of unclaimed bodies of those killed in ethnic conflict. Last month, the Supreme Court had directed the Manipur Government to make arrangements for the dignified burial of the victims of the ethnic violence whose bodies were lying in morgues. The bench, headed by CJI DY Chandrachud, had ordered the government to ensure decent and dignified burial.
