CPI (M) state secretary claimed that minority people were not allowed to offer prayers in the mosque

The Tripura CPI(M), on Tuesday, alleged that some mischievous people, claiming to be from Hindu-backed organisations are trying to create communal tension by claiming that an ancient structure, recognized now as a mosque at Dimatoli Gram panchayat under Rajnagar block in South district of Tripura, is actually a temple.

CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, speaking to reporters at the party headquarters in Agartala, said that every year since 1993 Sanghati Mela (Unity Fair) is held at the mosque at Dhimatali where people from all sections of society participate. The tradition continued even after BJP came to power but now some organizations which he claimed to be backed by the ruling party have recently claimed that the structure is actually a Jagannath temple.

It was also alleged that the minority people, recently were not allowed to offer prayers and police personnel were used to prevent them.

Chaudhury also a MLA said, “During his recent visit to the Sanghati fair, Chief Minister Manik Saha received a picture of the ancient mosque labeled as Jagannath temple. This is a divisive move to ignite fire. It’s possible the CM didn’t notice it at the time. We urge the CM to thwart the efforts of those attempting to sow discord and jeopardize unity.”

He added, “I would like to convey to the police chief that preventing Muslim individuals from offering prayers at the site is unacceptable. It’s disheartening to witness uniformed police obstructing those seeking to pray. This situation is truly regrettable.”

Chowdhury also alleged that it came to his notice that a RSS backed organisation Janajati Suraksha Mancha (JSM), in the name of preserving traditions of the indigenous people is organising a rally in Agartala on December 25, Christmas day, demanding delisting of tribals who converted to Christianity or any other religion, which may lead to communal disturbances in the state.

The CPM secretary said that they oppose it and demanded the state government to cancel the permission of holding the rally.
