Chief Minister Sangma today launced "BUILD"- Bringing Unity In Locale against Drugs, a community-state forum

Determined to wipe out the drug menace from its roots in Meghalaya, the Conrad Sangma government has gone a step ahead to achieve this.

Giving a clarion call to the society for fighting the drugs issue together, Chief Minister Sangma today launced “BUILD”- Bringing Unity In Locale against Drugs, a community-state forum under the Drug Reduction Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM).

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that his government is working in close coordination with the Centre, against the prevalence of drugs.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister said, “we have to remember that we have to work together with the central government and the other state governments very closely. The central government has been very agressive on this matter and they have been continuously pushing as to ensure that we take very aggressive steps in terms of continuous monitoring, intelligence collection, taking tough stand and tough measures against those who are involved in drugs smuggling business. So these steps have been taken, that is why you have seen so many arrests have been made.”

Chief Minister Sangma affirmed that things have changed now in comparison to times when there was no laboratory or any other form of facility to test drugs and book the accused involved in drugs trade.

The Chief Minister said, “We had challenges before because we did not have our own labs and hence we could not test the products, so the conviction which had to be done was taking a lot of time because by the time the lab gives the report back to us, the 90-day period was over. Hence, then we went ahead and got our own forensic lab, we invested in it. Today, we no longer have to depend on any other state. We do our own testing and immediately we are convicting people who are involved, based on the different laws that are there.”

Chief Minister Sangma insisted that his government is making all out efforts to deal with the situation and succeed in the war on drugs.

He said, “Therefore it is a concerted effort, both the central government and the state governments and our state government, we all working together. As I said the aggressiveness can be seen in the way different arrests have been made and the seizures that have been made.”

The Conrad Sangma government had embarked on a mission to build a ‘Drug free Meghalaya’ by launching the DREAM (Drug Reduction, Elimination & Action Mission) in June, earlier this year.
