LS polls 2024: Will UDP field Robert June Kharjahrin from Shillong seat?

UDP leader and minister Paul Lyngdoh said that Kharjahrin, former president of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has expressed interest in contesting the LS polls from Shillong

While the National Peoples’ Party (NPP) has named minister Ampareen Lyngdoh as its candidate from the prestigious Shillong Lok Sabha seat, Meghalaya minister and UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh said that UDP would soon be announcing its candidate for the Shillong LS seat and former president of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Robert June Kharjahrin is among the aspirants.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Lyngdoh said, “Well, he (Robert June Kharjahrin) is one of the individuals who has expressed interest in contesting. As we speak there are 3-4 ticket aspirants.”

Lyngdoh further said, “As far as UDP is concerned we have already gone ahead with the process of identifying the candidate and the process should be through in the next one month or even less than that.”
On November 8, the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) had reconstituted the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) to jointly prepare for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking to media, UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh had said that the two regional political parties have been working together in the past and reconstitution of the RDA today was as decided in a meeting held on May 30, after the 2023 Assembly election.
UDP is an ally of NPP in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).
