United States Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti inaugurated ‘Hump World War II’ museum at Pasighat in East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh today.

US Ambassador Eric Garcetti inaugurated the unique museum in presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

After inaugurating the museum, Eric Garcetti said that the ‘Hump World War II’ museum is the second in the South East Asia. It has great historical significance because the museum would be widely recognized not just in Arunachal Pradesh but also in other countries.

The museum displays parts of an airplane that crashed in the frontier state during World War II and honour “Hump Operation,” one of the most remarkable aviation feats in history.

The United States-led Allied Forces flew supplies over the Himalayas during World War II. Because of the Eastern Himalayas’ high altitude, the path was referred to as “The Hump.”

In the distant mountains and jungles of Arunachal Pradesh, many of their aircraft went missing and were never located.

The harsh flying conditions along the Hump route caused an estimated 650 aircraft to crash in World War II in regions of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Tibet, Yunnan, China, and Myanmar.

There are over 400 US airmen missing in India; most of their bodies are believed to be in Northeast India’s Himalayan Mountains.
