Mizoram NGOCC meets top ECI officials in New Delhi for change in counting date

First Published: 28th November, 2023 18:44 IST

The poll panel has already started its preparedness to count the votes of the November 7 Mizoram Assembly elections on December 3.

The representatives of the Mizoram NGO Co-ordination Committee on Tuesday met top ECI officials including the Chief Election Commissioner, Senior Deputy Election Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner for rescheduling the date for counting of votes for the 9th Mizoram Legislative Assembly election.

The CEC apprised the NGOCC that as one member of the Election Commission was not present, the appeal of the NGO Co-ordination Committee will have to be discussed again when all members of the Commission are present.

The meet began at 3 PM today, a five-member team of the NGOCC comprises Central Young Mizo Association President Lalhmachhuana, CYMA GS Prof. Malsawmliana, Lalbiakmawia Khiangte, Vice-president of Mizo Elders’ Association, H. Lalthianghlima, President of Mizo Zirlai Pawl, and Lalrampanmawia, Finance Secretary of Mizo Students Union.

The team left for Delhi last Thursday to meet the ECI officials for rescheduling the vote counting day that falls on a Sunday.

Since the announcement of the election schedule for five states on October 9, all political parties, church bodies, NGOs, and civil society organisations of Mizoram have been requesting the ECI to reschedule the counting date on December 3.

The ruling and Opposition parties and several organisations in Mizoram have been arguing that as a large percentage of the people in the state attend church services on Sunday, the vote counting should be rescheduled to another day, either to December 4 or 5 instead of December 3.

The poll panel has, however, already started its preparedness to count the votes of the November 7 Mizoram Assembly elections on December 3.
