BJP national president Amit Shah today lambasted the opposition for trying to create a panic in the country over the final draft NRC by stating that 40 lakh Indians have been declared illegal residents.

Significantly, Shah said only names of those who could not prove their credentials as Indian citizens after the initial verification have been removed from the list.

The BJP president, however, added in the same breath that this is not the final list and complete NRC will be finalized only after claims and objections are filed.

Raising eyebrows, Shah added that not a single genuine Indian has been left out of the list and only those who could not prove their credentials as Indian citizens are missing from the list.

Meanwhile, launching a direct attack on the Congress, the BJP national president asserted the Congress leadership that in 1971 the then prime minister Indira Gandhi had herself stated that “no Bangladeshi infiltrator” will be allowed to stay in India.

He added that the Congress was changing its stand frequently. Shah further said that the National Register of Citizens in Assam should be implemented in letter and spirit “firmly and fairly”.

Shah also did not spare West Bengal Chief Minister accusing her of playing vote bank politics over the NRC issue. In fact, Shah went on to dare all political parties to make their stand clear on the issue of illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

He added that the opposition is trying to create panic by misleading people on the NRC issue. Shah said the opposition is trying to make it a state vs state issue.
