Tynsong announced plans to unveil the party's candidates for Lok Sabha (LS) polls by the end of November. Meghalaya has two LS seats – Tura and Shillong

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong was appointed as the new NPP state president on Tuesday. Making the announcement, NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that there was full support from all rank and file of the party in the state for Tynsong becoming the state president.

Setting forth his vision as the president, Tynsong emphasized the importance of reconstituting the state-level committee. He further outlined the party’s ambitious plan to extend its reach to the district and block levels, with a specific focus on preparations for the upcoming elections scheduled for early next year. Tynsong also stressed the party’s commitment to engage with every household across Meghalaya, not only in the context of the election but as an ongoing effort to connect with the people of the state.

“My priority as the president will be to reconstitute the committee of the state-level unit, and thereafter we will also go down to the district level and to the block level because we have to prepare ourselves for the coming election which is to be held early next year and not only for the election we wanted to work hard reaching out to ourselves to every household in the entire state of Meghalaya,” DCM Tynsong said.

Tynsong emphasized the need for strict adherence to the party’s constitution, whether about the allocation of seats or any other matter, underscoring the commitment to transparency and democratic processes within the party.

In terms of electoral strategy, Tynsong announced plans to unveil the party’s candidate for the Lok Sabha polls by the end of November, as the NPP seeks to strengthen its presence in Meghalaya. He highlighted the necessity of expanding the party’s team, mentioning that they already have active units in multiple states, including Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.

He said that the decision to not contest the Mizoram elections “is based not on a lack of organizational presence but rather a strategic choice”.

Former NPP President and Rajya Sabha MP, WR Kharluki, expressed his contentment with the leadership transition, citing that he believes it is time to share the responsibilities. He expressed confidence in Tynsong’s ability to lead the party to greater heights and affirmed his support for the new president.

“I believe that we have to share the responsibility, so I think 16 years is long enough and I am a very happy man, and now is the time that I should be released and I am thankful for the party. Prestone is the right person and I do not see any problem and I am very sure that with his leadership the party will go from strength to strength”, added Kharluki.
