Meghalaya’s War on Drugs: Narcotics worth Rs 12 cr seized so far in October

The war on drugs has intensified in Meghalaya with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma himself closely monitoring the mission to ensure that the menace is wiped out without a trace. Narcotics worth Rs 12 crore has been seized so far this month (October).
It the latest seizure today, East Jaintia Hills district police arrested an inter-state drug trafficker in Khliehriat and recovered heroin worth Rs 1.5 crore from him.
It is not just that the youth have fallen prey to drugs, the state, over time, has emerged as a route for inter-state drugs peddling.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has vowed that he would not allow those pushing drugs amongst the youths to ruin their future.
On October 27, a team of East Khasi Hills district police apprehended 4 drug peddlers and recovered drugs worth Rs 25 lakh from their possession.
Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi had informed about this in a post on social media stating, “#DrugsFreeMeghalaya isn’t merely a motto but a Mission we’re deeply committed to!
Kudos to @EKH_Police for carrying out another successful op against drugs, where they not only recovered drugs worth Rs. 25 Lakhs but also arrested 4 drug suppliers.”
The other seizures this month include:
OCT 24- Heroin worth Rs 45 lakh was seized from an interstate drug trafficker at Ri Bhoi.
OCT 21
Heroin worth Rs 15 lakh was recovered and 3 persons were arrested from Dhankheti by East Jaintia Hills district police.
OCT 17
Interstate drug peddler was arrested at Nongsning village in East Jaintia Hills district. Crystal meth worth Rs 1.5 crore was recovered.
OCT 5
In one of the biggest seizures, heroin worth Rs 9 crore was recovered from the possession of 3 drug smugglers at Ri Bhoi.
OCT 3
44,900 bottles of spurious Phyensedyl was seized from a truck.
As per the Meghalaya Police, it seized drugs worth Rs 33 crore and arrested 20 drug dealers in the month of September.
Among the many efforts taken up by the Conrad Sangma government to wipe out drugs menace, Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM) is one such programme.
