The MLA termed the demand for creation of a new district as genuine and wants the government to consider it at the earliest
Trinamool Congress MLA from Meghalaya’s Rajabala constituency Mizanur Rahman Kazi has backed the idea for creation of a new district in the Garo Hills region to make life easier for the people living in at least 4-5 constituencies.
According to the MLA, the common people otherwise have to face numerous challenges for going to the district headquarters in Tura. The MLA believes that if a new district is set up than it would help a great deal in terms of administrative convenience for the common man residing in those areas.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, the TMC MLA said, “Actually the Government of Meghalaya and every other place we see they are trying to bring administration as closer to people as possible. So keeping that in view, time and again, there has been a lot of pressure and demand from the plain belt area to create a separate district for them. It is not exactly the plain belt of Meghalaya but it includes the hills side also. What I mean to say is that from Mahendraganj to Tikrikilla, including that belt I think there is a huge need of a district to bring the administration closer and development to the people. So time and again there has been demands from the NGOs as well as inhabitants of those areas and I feel that government should really consider to create a separate district for that area.”
When asked as to how many legislative assembly constituencies can be accomodated in the district if it is formed, MLA Mizanur Rahman Kazi said, “Tikrikilla, Phulbari, Rajabala, Selsella at least 4-5 constituencies are there which can be included in the new district if at all the government considers it.”
According to the MLA, the demand raised by various organizations for the creation of a new district is genuine. Backing his stand, Kazi said, “If you consider from Tikrikilla than the distance to Tura is 110-km, from Rajabala it is 70-80 km, so going to the headquarter, to travel around 100 kms or odd, it becomes difficult, its approachability is also less for the common people. So I think it is a genuine demand, if the district headquarter can be brought near or if a new district can be created than the people of those areas will be benefitted.”
But what stand the Conrad Sangma government adopts to address the demand will be something to watch out for.
