Mizoram Polls 2023: Eight women candidates file nomination papers

Four Independent women candidates, 2 from MNF and one each from the Congress and the ZPM filed their nominations today, the last date for filing of election papers
Eight women candidates – 4 Independent, 2 from MNF and one each from the Congress and the ZPM filed their nominations today, the last date for filing of election papers for the Mizoram Assembly polls to be held on November 7.

Congress has fielded one woman candidate – Meriam L Hrangchal from Lunglei South constituency, ruling MNF has fielded Provo Chakma from West Tuipui and B. Lalawmpuii from Aizawl East II.
MNF’s B. Lalawmpuii, an executive corporator in Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) has replaced Mizoram Sports Minister and businessman Robert Romawia Royte in the Aizawl East-II seat. Prova Chakma is a first timer who will contest from West Tupui assembly seat in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district.
BJP has fielded four women candidates outnumbering all the political parties in fray. F Lalremsangi, spokesperson for the party has been fielded in the high-stakes Aizawl South-1 seat. The other woman candidates are K Vanlalruati from Serchip, Judy Zohmingliani from Tuivawl and R Lalbiaktluangi from Lunglei West.
In 2018, fifteen women candidates were in the fray but the state did not elect a single woman. In fact, the Mizoram Legislative Assembly had not seen a single woman MLA for 27 years since the 1987 elections. In 2014, one woman — Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu — won the bypoll from the Hrangturzo seat and went on to become a minister.
