Is Meghalaya Cong bringing Mukul Sangma back? Deborah Marak says ready to mediate

But the big question is whether the Congress high command in Delhi will give a go ahead to the Meghalaya Congress.

Is the Meghalaya Congress facing leadership crisis after the exit of former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and 11 other MLAs? Perhaps yes. This may be one of the reasons why the party is now planning to bring the bigwig back from the Trinamool Congress.

The party’s strength dipped from being the single largest party in the Assembly in 2018 to a party with only 5 MLAs in 2023.

Meghalaya Congress working president and former cabinet minister Deborah Marak told Northeast Live that the party would like to convince Mukul Sangma to return to the Grand Old party. Marak said she is ready to negotiate if Congress gives her the authority.

Asked if she would try and convince Mukul Sangma to rejoin the Congress rather than floating his own party as is the buzz, Marak said, “Definitely, anytime they are welcome back to Congress, but if you ask me to negotiate, that the party has to decide, party has to authorize me to negotiate with the TMC leaders, than only I can do that and I am willing to do that.”

She said, “Last election we performed very badly. There are many factors. One of the main factor was that Congress was divided into two. Many big leaders from Garo Hills, they have gone and joined TMC. This is also one of the reason.”

Marak also said, “Leaders are not born just like that. Leaders are made, they have to be trained, then only they will become a good leader in future.”

The Meghalaya Congress president also observed that her party do not lack good leaders.

She said, “But often good leaders go away. Again to produce a good leader, to groom them up it takes time for the party. So we are doing that. Definitely leaders are going, leaders will come back. So we will get good leaders in the party, no doubt.”
