Sikkim: SDF welcomes Women’s Reservation Bill

The opposition SDF in Sikkim has welcomed the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in parliament terming it a historic win for the women of India. Rajya Sabha MP from the SDF party Hishey Lachungpa, voiced strong support for the Women’s Reservation Bill in the parliament. He also raised a pressing concern regarding the pending reservation for the Limboo and Tamang (LT) communities, urging the Central Government to ensure their rightful representation.
The SDF said the historic bill was long overdue and has concluded the decades-long issue of reservation for women in State and Central Legislative Bodies. The resounding support of the Bill signals a shift in the acceptance and approval of women’s role in the public life of the nation.
“The SDF party is committed to and invested in the empowerment of women and has implemented various programs, schemes and policies to ensure greater participation of women in the political sphere, in society and in the workplace,” said in a release.
The Women’s Reservation Bill, the 128th Amendment Bill, 2023, of the Constitution was introduced in the Lok Sabha on September 19. It received a resounding support with 454 votes in favour and 2 votes against the bill in the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha on September 21 passed the Bill with 214 votes in favour.
