The 3 players from Arunachal were part of the Indian contingent for Asian Games, but was denied entry by China
Condemning the incident of China denying entry to 3 Arunachal Wushu players into the country in the strongest terms, the Arunachal Pradesh Wushu Association (APWA) has now sought medal winner status for the disheartened players.
“The 3 Wushu players-Mepung Lamgu, Nyeman Wangsu and Onilu Tega be provided the status of medal winner of Asian Games,”
Toko Teki, former president and adviser, All Arunachal Pradesh Wushu Association said at a press conference held in Itanagar today.
He further demanded, “All incentives of Asian Games medal winner such as Gazetted Officer job under the state government, financial benefits of Central and State Governments be provided to them.”
“We want that the shattered dreams of the three girls are highlighted. They worked day and night, they did not meet their parents for months. They trained in sweat and tears. Now our coach Premchandra Singh and these 3 star althletes from Arunachal Pradesh, they are in tears,” an anguished Teki said.
Although extremely upset over what has happened with the promising athletes, the spirit of nationalism is still high among the people in the frontier state.
Toko Teki stated, “China is unnecessarily claiming Arunachal Pradesh to be their part. We are now 50+, but we never heard from our parents and even forefathers also, that Arunachal Pradesh was ever with the Chinese Emperor or with Tibet.
It is a false propaganda by China. This is a bilateral issue. The GoI consider AP as part of India. China should understand, if necessary they should test and ask the people of Arunachal Pradesh. We are very much Indian.”
Three women Wushu players—Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega, and Mepung Lamgu—after receiving their accreditation cards from the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC), which also acts as an entry visa, were required to download their travel document, which is validated upon arrival.
However, the three players could not download their travel document on Wednesday when they were scheduled to travel for the Asian Games, while other Wushu team members, comprising a total of 10 players, along with the coaching staff, faced no such issues and boarded the flight for Hong Kong on Wednesday night, from where they had a connecting flight to Hangzhou.
