Assam: One-member inquiry commission probing Mukroh firing submits report

The one-member inquiry commission, led by retired Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan, appointed by the Assam Governor, has submitted its report on the tragic incident that took place on November 22, 2022, in Mukroh, under the Zirikinding Police Station in the West Karbi Anglong District bordering Meghalaya.
The incident resulted in loss of five civilians lives and one home guard.
The commission concluded its investigation, as per official notification, and handed over the report on September 20, to the Additional Chief Secretary of Assam, Home and Political Department. The inquiry period was extended twice, ending on September 22, 2023. During its investigation, the commission interviewed numerous witnesses and reviewed documents provided by the Forest and Police Departments, as well as various organizations.
The incident occurred when the Assam Police and Assam Forest Guards chased a timber-laden truck on November 22, 2022. The truck was eventually stopped in Mukroh village. The presence of the Assam Police in Mukroh caused tension among the villagers, leading to a confrontation and subsequent gunfire.
The inquiry report now sets the stage for further action and decision regarding the Mukroh firing incident.
