NIT Silchar student suicide case: Dean replaced; students continue hunger strike

The situation remains volatile at the NIT Silchar premises as over 2000 students are carrying out an indefinite hunger strike organized by the Gymkhana Student’s Union Body
Amid strong demand from the students seeking the resignation of Dean (Academics) Dr Binoy Krishna Roy, blaming him for the suicide committed by a 3rd year student in the premier educational institute, the NIT authorities replaced Dean Roy and gave the charge of Dean (Academics) as an interim measure to Associate Dean of Academics, informed the Registrar of NIT Silchar, KL Baishnab.
The students alleged that it was due to the indifference of the Dean that the student took his life and, therefore, wanted Dean Roy to be removed from his post.
“Dean Academics is a professor. He will remain a professor. Meanwhile, as an interim major, we have made Associate Dean of Academics, Lalit Chandra Saikia, the Dean of Academics until further order,” KL Baishnab said.
The situation remains volatile at the NIT Silchar premises as over 2000 students are carrying out an indefinite hunger strike organized by the Gymkhana Student’s Union Body (GSUB) demanding justice for their fellow student. The hunger strike entered its third day today.
The protesting students have submitted a memorandum with as many as six major demands to the NIT authorities. The agitating students are also seeking a high-level committee for academic reforms to minimize the pressure on them.
KL Baishnab claimed that the management has made multiple attempts to speak to the agitating students and come to a common ground, but the students are not convinced.
On September 15, Koj Buker, a student at NIT Silchar, died by suicide. The student was a resident of Arunachal Pradesh and was a boarder at hostel number 6.
The deceased was reportedly facing issues with his studies and was trying to reach out to his professors for assistance. On Friday, he tried to meet with the dean, but the dean allegedly denied the student’s request and treated him disrespectfully, which compelled the student to take this extreme step.
