This drug helps in blood sugar regulation by maintaining a constant quantity of insulin in the body throughout the day

The Basaglar Kwikpen which is a long-acting type of insulin used to treat diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2 in both adults and children will no longer be sold in India as the American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly has decided to stop selling the drug in India.

According to a public notification released on August 30, the company has announced that it will stop importing and marketing the drug after March 5, 2024.
The company has urged the diabetic patients to consult with their doctors about alternate prescriptions.

Currently, Pharma company Cipla is marketing the medication in India.

According to reports, Eli Lilly’s decision to stop importing and marketing the drug in India was made after careful consideration with the goal of streamlining its product line in India.

Accordin to the company, due to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority’s (NPPA) price cap and the product’s intense competition in the Indian market, it is no longer feasible financially.

The price for insulin Glargine 100IU per ml pens has been restricted by the NPPA to Rs 244.13 per ml.

Although the product was initially successful after being introduced by Eli Lilly and Cipla in 2019, sales volume has been low as a result of intense competition.

According to the company, it would keep concentrating on delivering cutting-edge medications to India and will continue to provide Basaglar insulin in the more widely used 3 ml cartridge version.

This drug helps in blood sugar regulation by maintaining a constant quantity of insulin in the body throughout the day. This reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications.
