Sikkim govt bans homestay owners from renting, leasing their establishments to third parties

To empower the local entrepreneurs in the state, the Sikkim government has prohibited homestay owners in the Himalayan state from leasing or renting their homestay establishments to any third party, an official said on Monday.

The homestays will now be run and operated only by the local entrepreneur owning the business.

Issuing an advisory, the state government’s Tourism and Civil Aviation department stated on September 11 that, as per sub-Rule (6) of Rule 3 of the Sikkim Registration of Homestay Establishment Rules, 2013, homestay owners are not permitted to lease or rent their homestay units to any third party. The homestay owners are advised to comply with the same.

Any report on violation of the same shall be dealt with strictly by the department, it said.
