First Published: 12th September, 2023 14:32 IST

Of the total 90 projects inaugurated, 36 are in Arunachal Pradesh

Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, today dedicated 90 infrastructure projects worth Rs 2,491 crore to the service of the nation. A move that would further strengthen the crucial infrastructure along the international borders and give an edge to the armed forces posted on the borders along China.
The projects inaugurated by the Defence Minister include 22 Roads, 63 Bridges, Nechiphu Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, two airfields in West Bengal and two helipads.
Of the total 90 projects inaugurated, 11 are in Jammu and Kashmir, 26 in Ladakh, 36 in Arunachal Pradesh, five in Mizoram, three in Himachal Pradesh, two each in Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal, and one each in Nagaland, Rajasthan, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
It may be mentioned here that among the 90 strategic projects inaugurated, 36 are in Arunachal Pradesh.
Among the key projects inaugurated include the 422.9-meter-long, Class 70 RCC Devak Bridge on the Bishnah-Kaulpur-Phulpur Road in Jammu & Kashmir which is of immense strategic significance in terms of the nation’s defence capabilities. The bridge will ensure fast deployment of troops, heavy equipment, and mechanized vehicles to forward areas, besides boosting socio-economic development.
Another strategic project is the 500-meter-long Nechiphu Tunnel on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang Road in Arunachal Pradesh. The tunnel will be a breakthrough for the movement of forces to the frontier areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
The Defence Minister also inaugurated the reconstructed and revamped Bagdogra and Barrackpore Airfields in West Bengal. Rs 529 crore was spent for the reconstruction of both the airfields by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) with the aim to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF) along the Northern Borders.
Rajnath Singh also laid the foundation stone of Nyoma Airfield in Ladakh. Once completed the Nyoma Airfield in Eastern Ladakh will be a boost for the IAF as far as the Northern Borders are concerned. These infrastructure projects have been constructed under challenging weather conditions, at most inhospitable terrain locations.
Notably, BRO completed the construction of these critical strategic projects in record time frame and many of these projects have been constructed in a single working season using state-of-the-art technology.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajnath Singh lauded the efforts of the BRO and said, “I remember that once I had referred the Border Roads Organisation as “Bro” (Brother). By creating infrastructure along the border, BRO has played the role of a brother for the Armed Forces, this is what I feel. The works done to develop infrastructure by the BRO along the border areas not only helps in safeguarding the nation, but also has been playing a pivotal role in boosting the socio-economic sector. This is why I had referred the Border Roads Organisation as “Bro” (Brother) and I think that it is right.”
“Your real achievement is that you made the difficult look easy, with your effort. The citizens of the country have stopped taking border area development as an achievement but it has become normal for them, ” Rajnath Singh added.
Highlighting the BRO’s success in boosting infrastructure along the strategic border areas, the defence minister stated, “The GoI with the help of BRO has launched 205 strategic projects which include roads, bridges and tunnels in the last 2 and a half years, and today we are launching 90 more. This takes the total number to 295. It means in 900 days nearly 300 roads, bridges and tunnels have been dedicated to the nation, which means in 3 days 1 project has been completed by the BRO at an average.”
